This page explains how to find and obtain Bellingham death records, what the indexes contain, and how to order certified death certificates.
Bellingham Overview
How Bellingham Death Index Records Work
Death records in Bellingham follow Washington State's statewide vital records system. When a death occurs in Bellingham, the funeral home or attending physician files a death certificate with the Department of Health electronically through the EBDRS system. That certificate becomes part of DOH's permanent registry. The city of Bellingham does not run its own death record system. All certificates go to the state, and the state is where you search and request records.
The death index is not the same as a full death certificate. An index entry shows only the name, date of death, county, certificate number, age, and gender. It has no cause of death and no family information. Think of the index as a directory. You search the index to find the certificate number for a specific person, then use that number to request the full document from DOH.
Bellingham is the county seat of Whatcom County. All Bellingham deaths appear in the Whatcom County portion of the state death index. The Whatcom County Auditor in Bellingham also holds pre-1907 death records for the county. Bellingham was founded in 1853, so early death records for the city may appear in those older county registers. The Washington State Archives Northwest Regional Branch in Bellingham holds microfilmed Whatcom County records not yet available online.

Ordering a Bellingham Death Certificate
Certified death certificates for Bellingham deaths are ordered from the Washington State Department of Health. Under RCW 70.58, deaths within the past 50 years are restricted to qualified applicants. Qualified applicants include the spouse or domestic partner, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and legal representatives of the deceased. The fee is $20 per certified copy.
A Verification of Death letter costs $15. It confirms that a death record exists but does not provide the full certificate. The Verification is useful when you simply need to confirm that a death occurred and do not need a certified copy for legal or estate purposes. It has fewer access restrictions than a full certificate.

Public Records and Access Laws
Washington's Vital Statistics Act, RCW 70.58, restricts certified death certificates for deaths within 50 years to qualified applicants only. Deaths older than 50 years are public records available to anyone. The death index records in the Digital Archives from 1907 to 1967 are completely open to the public. No restrictions apply to the index itself because it only shows basic identifying information without cause of death or private medical details.
Washington's Public Records Act, RCW 42.56, applies to all other government records including those held by Bellingham city agencies and Whatcom County. You can submit a public records request for police reports, ME investigative files, or other death-related documents. Agencies must respond within five business days and provide records subject to any applicable exemptions.
