How Renton Death Index Records Work

When a death occurs in Renton, the attending physician or funeral home files a death certificate with the Washington State Department of Health within ten days. DOH keeps all death certificates from 1907 to the present in one unified statewide registry. There is no separate Renton database or city-level death index. All Renton deaths go into the same system as every other Washington death.

The death index itself is not the full certificate. The index is a summary that shows the name of the deceased, date of death, county, certificate number, age, and gender. It does not include cause of death, family details, or other restricted data. The index helps you find a specific record. Once you have the certificate number from the index, you can use it to request the full certified death certificate from DOH or from Public Health Seattle and King County.

Renton sits entirely within King County. King County death records include all deaths occurring within Renton city limits. The King County Death Returns from 1881 through 1907 are also available in the Digital Archives, so researchers can go back even further than the 1907 statewide start date for this area.

Note: The city of Renton does not issue or hold death certificates. Those records are maintained by the state DOH and the county's vital statistics office.

Which County Handles Renton Death Records

Renton is in King County, Washington's most populous county. King County processes death records for Renton through two offices: the King County Auditor and Public Health Seattle and King County. When a death occurs in Renton, the funeral home submits the certificate through the state's Electronic Birth and Death Registration System. That certificate then becomes part of both the King County local records and the DOH statewide registry.

King County is one of the few counties in Washington that has a local vital statistics office able to issue certified death certificates directly, in addition to the state DOH in Tumwater. Renton families can use either office. Both charge $20 per certified copy. The local office in Seattle can be more convenient if you don't want to travel to Tumwater.

The Washington State Digital Archives at digitalarchives.wa.gov is the best free tool for Renton death index searches. The statewide death index covers 1907 through 1967, and the King County Death Returns in the archives go back to 1881. That gives Renton researchers access to over 80 years of indexed death records at no cost and with no registration required.

To search, go to the Digital Archives site and use the fields for first name, last name, year of death, and county. Filter by King County to narrow results to Renton and the broader area. Each index result shows the person's name, death date, county, certificate number, age at death, and gender. Write down the certificate number if you want to order the full record from DOH later.

The Digital Archives is free and open to the public with no account needed to view index results.

For deaths after 1967, there is no public online index. You would need to call DOH at 360-236-4300 or contact Public Health Seattle and King County at 206-477-4000 to confirm whether a record exists. DOH staff can often verify a record before you pay for a certified copy. You can also search by "Renton Washington death" at the Digital Archives for more targeted results that may include cemetery and burial records specific to Renton.

Ordering a Renton Death Certificate

Washington State law under RCW 70.58 controls access to death certificates. Deaths within the past 50 years are restricted to qualified applicants. The fee is $20 per certified copy. A Verification of Death letter costs $15 and confirms the death occurred without providing full certificate details. It is easier to get and may be enough for some purposes.

Qualified applicants for restricted records include the spouse or domestic partner, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, or legal representative of the deceased. You must show valid photo ID and proof of your relationship when requesting a restricted record. For deaths older than 50 years, anyone can request the record. Those are public and have no relationship requirement.

You have four ways to order a Renton death certificate:

  • In person at DOH in Tumwater (101 Israel Road SE, open Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm) or at Public Health Seattle and King County (908 Jefferson St., Suite 111)
  • By mail to DOH at PO Box 9709, Olympia WA 98507-9709
  • By phone at 360-236-4300, Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm
  • Online through VitalChek at vitalchek.com

Renton Local Resources

The Renton City Clerk handles public records requests for city records under RCW 42.56. The Clerk's office does not hold death certificates, but it can assist with related city documents and point you to the right agency. The Renton Police Department Records Unit keeps police reports and incident records, including reports from death investigations, accidents, or other incidents that led to a death in the city.

The King County Medical Examiner investigates sudden, unexplained, or violent deaths occurring in Renton. When the ME's office handles a Renton case, it files the death certificate with DOH. The ME's investigative records are separate from vital records and can be requested under RCW 42.56. Those records include investigation reports and findings, not the certified death certificate.

Historical Renton Death Records

For deaths before 1907, researchers need to go beyond the state DOH system. The Washington State Archives holds early death registers and pre-statehood records that predate Washington's 1907 mandatory death registration law. King County's pre-1907 death returns go back to 1881 and are indexed in the Digital Archives for free online searching. Renton was incorporated in 1901, so the final years before statewide registration may appear in both early city records and the county death returns from that period.

The State Archives Research Facility at 1129 Washington St SE, Olympia can assist with requests that go beyond what appears online. Staff can be reached at 360-586-1492 or archives@sos.wa.gov, Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. The Puget Sound Regional Branch in Bellevue also holds microfilm copies of King County records that have not yet been digitized. Their main site is at sos.wa.gov/archives.

Other useful sources for historical Renton death research include probate records at King County Superior Court, historic newspapers through the Washington State Library, and FamilySearch's Washington death index collections. Cemetery records for Renton-area cemeteries may also appear in the Digital Archives.

Two state laws shape how you can access death records in Washington. The first is RCW 70.58, the Vital Statistics Act. It limits access to certified death certificates for deaths within the past 50 years. Only qualified applicants can get those records. Deaths older than 50 years are open to the public without restriction of any kind.

The second law is RCW 42.56, the Public Records Act. This law covers all government records held by state and local agencies. For records outside the vital records system, such as police reports, medical examiner files, or city records, you submit a public records request under RCW 42.56. Agencies must respond within five business days and must provide an estimate for producing the records.

Death index records in the Digital Archives from 1907 through 1967 are fully public. The index shows only basic identifying details and no cause of death, so it does not carry the same privacy protections as a certified certificate. Anyone can search and view the index at no cost with no account required. The CDC also maintains Washington vital statistics data nationally. Their Washington page at cdc.gov provides additional contact information and links to state resources.
