Death records in Whitman County, like all Washington counties, flow to the Washington State Department of Health. When someone dies in Whitman County, the attending physician, funeral director, or medical certifier files a death certificate with DOH through the state's electronic registration system within ten days. DOH holds all certified death certificates from 1907 onward in the central vital records registry. The county does not maintain a separate set of certified certificates for that period.

Whitman County is in Washington's Palouse region, a rural agricultural area. The county seat is Colfax, and Washington State University is located in Pullman, the county's largest city. The university's presence means the county has a somewhat larger and more diverse population than its rural character might suggest, and WSU deaths may appear in county records alongside longer-term residents.

The death index is a summary of each record that shows the deceased's name, date and county of death, certificate number, age, and gender. Cause of death is not included. The 1907 through 1967 index is free to search at the Digital Archives. You use the certificate number from the index to order the full record from DOH. After 1967, no public online index exists and you contact DOH directly.

Ordering a Whitman County Death Certificate

Washington death certificates are issued by the state Department of Health. The fee is $20 per certified copy, with each additional copy ordered at the same time also costing $20.
